In his paintings, Bacon’s special interest is the interplay of energy and the human body. In Body Fragments, Theaterlabor projects the effect of these paintings onto live bodies. The performance embodies the raw energy that exudes from the figures in Bacon’s work.

While watching the presentations, the first impression is that of a destructive force that reduces bodies to flesh and blood. But Bacon’s bodies somehow remain complete, emanating dignity and violent beauty. Theaterlabor explores that energetic tension to build a vital collage of body fragments and an agile morphology of beauty.

Originally commissioned by the 2005 Venice Biennale, Body Fragments is a work-in-progressand will be presented to each audience in a fresh, new version.
