Missing People - The Power of Remembrance

In the so-called Balkan Conflict of the 1990s Serbia and Germany were fighting each other: the bombs dropped on Belgrad reached their targets owing to German reconnaissance. How does this impact on us - a generation that has stood firm upon its conviction never to wage war again? Or can there be something like a "just war"? What is truth, what is propaganda?

This evening, however, we will look at the missing people who disappeared in Serbia and Bosnia. The fate of those families with missing people is particularly traumatic, as they can never be certain about what has happened to their loved ones. We reclaim the missing people for the stage and thus for our awareness: the theatre as a place of testimony and work of mourning at the same time.

Building upon that we are looking for analogies in our own environment. Topics of taboo, crimes that have not been atoned for, castaways from families and society. In our family histories we have found many tragedies that have been silenced. Could they have been prevented? We will recount stories. Something experienced, told, fictive.

"Missing People - The Power of Remembrance" is a coproduction between the DAH Theatre, Belgrad, and the Theaterlabor, Bielefeld. From two self-contained perspectives both theatres will create an interrelating theatrical event.

Besides all different types of original performances, Theaterlabor has achieved a certain reputation by being host to international theatre festivals and exchange projects.
Eight major festivals (360°) have taken place at our location in Bielefeld which were organized in 1986, 1992, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2000 Theaterlabor was hosting the ISTA - International School for Theatre Anthropology, in 2006 the European project "Sources-Research-Innovation" was carried out.
In 2011 we had two small festivals:
"Junge Triebe - young shoots" invited young artists from different genres.
"art@home" had its focus on artistic work in private rooms.
We will continue with both types of festivals in 2012 and in 2013 there will be a special festival within the context of our 30th anniversary.

At present our theatre transfer project "Doppelgaengers" with our Canadian partner One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre from Calgary has just started. We've just had some performances of OYR in Bielefeld from the 15th to the 19th February.
In April we rehearsed the German version of "Smash Cut Freeze" with Denise Clarke. In November/December we will work on the english version of the performance "Schlachtertango" together with Andy Curtis from OYR. It will be performed on the High Performance Rodeo Festival in January.

The name "Doppelgaengers" (with exactly this spelling) was given to us by an article of the Sverwe magazin in 2009. It's based on interviews with Michael Green and Siegmar Schröder and really worth reading. You can download it here.
